Now he's back to update us how his business grown in the last year through his personal video content marketing Joining us today is Beav Brodie from Tactical Baby Gear. Selecting Social Media Goals & Metrics

by Bryan Smith @

I sat in a room with a businessman who had reached his breaking point with his under-performing sales team. When asked what he thought the solution was to boost sales, he threw his hands up in frustration and said: “Better get on the Tweeter.” True story. That whole scenario is cringe-worthy, I know. But believe it or not, this social media rookie was on the right track in one critical way…his goal. I doubt he knew how to define who his audience is and engage with them strategically on social media. Let’s be honest, he probably didn’t know how to tweet, post, or tag. But he did understand exactly what he wanted to achieve by engaging on social media—increasing his sales. And because he was crystal clear about his goal, he would then be able to measure whether his social media tactics were hitting the mark. “Only when you’re clear on what you want to achieve will you know what to measure to track your progress.” Measurement can pose a whole new set of challenges for marketers who need to demonstrate the value of social media. So what appears to commonly get in the way and make the task of measuring ROI for social media tricky at best? Here are a few of the biggest challenges that we come across in the market: Overwhelming data: social marketers are overwhelmed with data. With so many social media networks and each network having its own analytics and set of metrics, it’s no wonder marketers are coming up with a fragmented picture of their efforts. Goals & Metric Selection: In addition to excessive data, social marketers also aren’t great at defining goals for social media and selecting the metrics that will help them measure success. Lack of Analytics Training: Social media marketers are also typically not trained in web analytics and don’t know how to properly tag social media campaigns so that they roll up in web analytics in an organized fashion, a crucial part of proving the impact of social. According to Social Media Examiner, “88% of marketers want to know how to measure their return on investment for social media activities.” So the interest is there. But is it translating into better tracking of KPIs and reporting on ROI? Not yet. A CMO Survey found that “only 20.3% [of marketers] are able to prove the impact [of social media] quantitatively.” If you’re in the other 80%, a good starting point is to choose a couple business goals that can be supported through social media and then track the KPIs associated with those goals. Bluetrain recently presented this list of common business goals and the corresponding KPIs at the 2017 iMEDIA Social Media Conference which will help get you on your way. 10 Business Goal Examples for Social Media: Business Goal Example KPIs 1)    Brand Awareness Impressions, reach, amplification1 2)    Website Traffic Number of site sessions, pageviews, avg duration 3)    Community Building Engagement2 & amplification metrics 4)    Event Promotion Number of event RSVPs, amplification 5)    Customer Feedback & Reviews Number of customer reviews, comments, posts, PMs 6)    Customer Support Number of requests, sentiment, response time 7)    Lead Generation Clicks, landing page engagement, form submissions 8)    Content Promotion Amplification, pageviews, inbound links 9)    Sales and Revenue Number of transactions, revenue, ROI, avg value 10) Product Promotion Number of free trials, product inquiries, product-related comments, posts, PMs 1 amplification metrics would include shares, retweets, repins etc. 2 engagement would include likes, comments, replies, favourites etc. In addition to clarifying goals and metrics, using tools like Google Analytics and the analytics tied to the major social media platforms are a great way to track some of the KPIs indicated above. More than likely, if you need to display ROI to management, the next step will be to setup effective reporting to clearly communicate the performance on the selected goals. However, before getting ahead of yourself with reporting, first simply choose one or more goals from the list above and start measuring, and you’ll be well on your way to demonstrating Social ROI, on ‘the Tweeter’, or on any other social media platform your business leverages. You’ll be amazed at the results you can achieve once you’re clear on the business goal(s) of your social efforts.

5 Website Development Experts You Need on Your Team

by Bryan Smith @

Building a website is very much like building a house. It takes a lot of planning and preparation and requires a crew of skilled workers to build it. When done right, they both result in something that is built to last and perform. If not, they can fall flat. When I hear about website developments or redesigns, I often see the same mistake happen repeatedly—neglect to hire a full crew of experts. Like a home build, a website requires many different skill sets to build it properly. I believe this mistake happens not because of a desire to cut corners, but because of a lack of clarity around the value each crew member brings to the project. So, while it may not be exhaustive, here’s a list of some of the key experts (in my opinion) to have on your website development or redesign team and how to get the most out of their role: 1. The Web Designer This person is responsible for the look and layout of the website. They are similar to a graphic designer in their creativity, but they design specifically for online functionality. This person will create wireframes and mockups to show what the site will look like. They are also responsible for creating the design elements and selecting the imagery to implement into the website. The value of this person is obvious. At a minimum, they should deliver a visually appealing website that aligns with the organizational brand and modern design trends. To get even more out of this role: Make sure the designer creates mock-ups of mobile and tablet versions for your site as well as a desktop version. Moving forward, the mobile design will likley be more crucial to business success online than desktop. Ensure the Web Designer knows the target audience, the business outcomes you expect from your site, and the most important calls to action so that the site is designed to support these priorities. 2. The SEO Expert A critical role in website development is that of the Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Expert (yes, I may be a bit biased here). Without this role, a beautiful and perfectly developed website might not ever be seen. This would be like building a magnificent custom home and never sending out the invites to your Open House party. The SEO Expert provides valuable guidance on everything from information architecture to content to technical setup to analytics, and is responsible for how the website performs to meet business goals once it’s launched. To get the most out of this role: Involve the SEO Expert from the very beginning when you’re first planning your website. Make sure this person works closely with the other team members to ensure SEO best practices are in place so the site can deliver on the desired business outcomes. My tip is to ensure there are recurring ‘all party’ calls/meetings to check-in and discuss the website progress and avoid any work happening in silos (to avoid rework). 3. The Copywriter The Copywriter fills the pages of a website with content that is engaging and relevant to visitors. When done well, content is one of the most essential elements of a website and will play an important role in pulling people through the website, persuading them to set up an account, or compelling them to share what they’ve read with others. The Copywriter should be armed with the brand guidelines of the organization to ensure that they write in the proper ‘voice’ of the organization. To get the most out of this role: Make sure the Copywriter knows who the primary audience personas are for the website so that the content is written with the reader in mind (user intent). Provide the Copywriter with keyword/topic research and audience intent from the SEO Expert to incorporate into the content to enhance the ‘search friendliness’ of the site. Connect this person with the designer and the SEO Expert to ensure the content is laid out properly on each webpage and has the right length and word count to both read well and look great. 4. The Developer This role is what takes all the output from the other roles and turns it into a fully-functional website. The Developer will recommend a Content Management System (CMS) for the website and will complete all the necessary coding. Prior to going live, the Developer will also test the site to ensure everything is working as it’s supposed to (ex. speed, mobile, browsers) and will conduct the necessary fixes until it’s ready to go. To maximize this role: Make sure it is clear why they have selected the CMS they’ll be working on and ensure that it can be easily maintained after the site is launched or that you’ll be given training so you can update it yourself. Confirm what the ongoing costs will be for the website so there are no surprises down the road. Ensure the Developer and the SEO Expert are both involved in the analytics for the site so that you end up with reports that will track the business outcomes you specified for your site. There are often simple analytics and SEO plugins for each CMS; however, out of the box they won’t necessarily do the things that are specifically important to your business, which will make it difficult to assess whether your website is performing the way you need it to. 5. The Webmaster Every site requires ongoing monitoring and maintenance following a website development or redesign. CMS upgrades, backups, site outages, broken links, domain registrations, software updates, and changes to copy will all come up at some point, so make sure you know who will be responsible for addressing them. Sometimes companies that build websites also offer ongoing maintenance or will provide training to you or your staff. But they may also view their role as complete the second the website is launched. To set this role up for success: Make sure you’re clear on responsibilities and expectations and […]

21 Questions with Joe, Bluetrain’s New Account Manager

by Roxanne Bonilla @

We are proud to introduce Joe, one of our new Account Managers. Learn about this movie-goer’s background in football, his very cool financial blog, and his unexpected guilty pleasure. 1. RB: Where did you grow up? JM: I grew up in Calgary but I was born in Nigeria. RB: How did you end up in Edmonton? JM: I came to Edmonton for school. I was recruited by the U of A for football. RB: Is your family still in Calgary? JM: Yeah. RB: When did you come to Canada from Nigeria? JM: When I was in grade 2. 2. RB: What did you like most about growing up in Nigeria/Calgary? JM: Nigeria I barely remember because it was so long ago. Calgary was nice. I had a regular upbringing. Grew up in a cul-de-sac so lots of neighbours and activities and water fights. 3. RB: Any siblings? JM: Two siblings. RB: Are they in Calgary as well? JM: Yeah. 4. RB: What words would your family use to describe you? JM: Jokester. Laid back. Sporty. RB: You can be our sporty spice! 5. RB: What is your family like? JM: Loving, regular family. Fun. 6. RB: What did you want to be when you were a kid? JM: A football player. I wanted to play in the NFL, but as I grew older I realized I should probably have a back-up plan. Then I fell in love with business and marketing. RB: Do you still play competitively? JM: No. I stopped a couple years ago. RB: Why did you hang up the cleats up? JM: I was on my third or fourth concussion. RB: That’s a good reason to stop! What position did you play? JM: Defensive end. RB: How long did you play? JM: I played since I was in grade 7, but since my family is from Nigeria and soccer is a global sport, I started off playing soccer. RB: Why did you switch? JM: One day I saw football on TV and decided to make the switch! 7. RB: How would you describe your family’s heritage? JM: 100% Nigerian. 8. RB: What made you decide to apply to Bluetrain? JM: I always had an interest in marketing. I took economics in university where we worked with data and analytics and I thought that was pretty transferrable since Bluetrain is very data-focused. Digital marketing is a growing industry as well so I thought this could be a great career! 9. RB: Do you have your own personal blog? JM: I do. Another interest of mine is finance and investing. I took lots of classes in school and do a lot of investing myself, so I have an investing blog called Newly Investor for people who want to get into the world of investing. RB: Very cool! 10. RB: What do you think about the world of digital marketing? JM: There is lots of opportunity! I think as the world switched from traditional to digital, there’s going to be a huge boom in the industry. It’s definitely a growing industry. 11. RB: Favorite food? JM: I really like Westernized-Chinese food. It’s my go-to junk food. RB: Do you have a favourite spot to order from? JM: Szechuan Kitchen close to my place. I like Vietnamese food too; Lemongrass Café is awesome! 12. RB: Mushrooms or olives? JM: Mushrooms. You can use them in more dishes! 13. RB: What do you do for fun? JM: I go to the movies–that’s my go-to. I also like going to the gym, hanging out with friends, and reading. 14. RB: What do you do to relax? JM: Pretty much the same as what I do to have fun. Haha! 15. RB: What is your guilty pleasure? JM: I’m not proud of this but sometimes I watch trashy reality TV shows with my girlfriend like The Kardashian’s and Jersey Shore. 16. RB: Favourite book or movie? JM: Favourite movie right now is Get Out; it’s a new one that just came out. RB: And favourite book? JM: I like reading business books. Phil Knight’s book Shoe Dog. Elon Musk is another person I follow. He’s the real-life Iron Man. 17. RB: Do you play volleyball or squash? This is a mandatory question from Bryan we ask everyone new. JM: I actually play both. RB: You ARE sporty spice! JM: Haha! But mostly volleyball. 18. RB: Summer or winter? JM: That’s easy. Summer! I’m definitely a beach person. RB: Any future destinations? JM: Turks & Caicos. 19. RB: Tea or Coffee? JM: Tea. RB: Caffeinated or herbal? JM: Caffeinated. 20. RB: Another important question – cupcakes or cookies? JM: Cupcakes. 21. RB: Speaking of cupcakes or cookies – when is your birthday? JM: October 20th

21 Questions with Matt, Bluetrain’s Digital Marketing Strategist

by Roxanne Bonilla @

Bluetrain is proud to introduce Matthew Brown, our new Digital Marketing Strategist. Learn about Matt’s experience in the digital marketing world, his lovely family, and his hilarious hate for olives. 1. RB: Where did you grow up? MB: Sherwood Park. RB: Have you been here your whole life? MB: I moved away when I was 18-ish, lived in Calgary for a while and Victoria for two and a half years, then back to Edmonton to go back to school. RB: What did you go to school for? MB: I went to MacEwan for Digital Arts & Media 2. RB: What did you like most about growing up in Sherwood Park? MB: Small community feel with connection to the big city. RB: Did you get into the city lots? MB: Yeah, I experienced Whyte Ave when I was 14 years old. My friends and I used to bus down there every weekend in the summer. 3. RB: Do you have any siblings? MB: Yes, one sister. RB: Is she in Sherwood Park? MB: No, she is in Morges, Switzerland. RB: So exotic! Have you been? MB: No, my daughter has though! RB: Did she like it there? MB: Yes! She spent a summer there. They travelled all through Switzerland, Germany, and Italy. My daughter’s favourite was Milan. RB: Why’s that? MB: Mostly the shopping. 4. RB: What words would your family use to describe you? MB: Probably stoic, quiet, calm, and reserved. 5. RB: What is your family like? MB: Evolving as my kids get older. They used to be so quiet but they’re coming out of their shells now. We joke, tease each other, and laugh. We’re a family that spends a lot of time together. 6. RB: When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you became a grown up? MB: A firefighter. RB: Did you ever tour a hall? MB: I did not, but one of the first places I lived after getting married was in the river valley close to the fire fighter’s training hall. RB: So you were close. MB: Funny enough, we’d see them out there practicing when we walked around the neighbourhood… Along with all the housewives sitting on their front step watching the guys run around. 7. RB: How would you describe your family’s heritage? MB: On my side of the family, my sister and I are adopted and my father is also adopted and his two brothers were adopted too. So, we’ve always struggled with our identity because of that and I don’t know a lot about my family history…. English-Scottish I would guess. My wife is also adopted! Our children are our first blood relatives. Her background is primarily Scottish, Swedish, and Norwegian. RB: Have you travelled over there? MB: No, one day we’ll tour that area though! Scotland for sure and England because it’s England. 8. RB: What made you decide to come work with Bluetrain? MB: The thing that attracted me to Bluetrain is that it was a different take on an agency—more focused and specific, and in an area that I think has a lot of potential and opportunity. 9. RB: Do you have your own personal blog? MB: I do not, but I used to do a lot of writing! I was part of a user group for digital signage which was part of the Digital Signage Expo Advisory Group. I was part of their End User Council. There would be a monthly question that I would write an answer for. RB: Are there any questions you remember that stood out? MB: None that stand out specifically but once a year the expo would put on their annual conference and I’d get to meet the other advisory members. It was neat to hear from them that they were reading my articles and getting a lot out of them. These experts coming to me and telling me how much they enjoyed it. RB: Very cool! 10. RB: What do you think about the world of digital marketing? MB: I am a firm believer in the opportunity of digital marketing, but I am also an advocate for being responsible with it! I think it’s really easy for companies and brands to get caught up in the hype and I think it’s important—especially for agencies—not to take advantage of that. RB: How many years have you been working in the industry? MB: Almost 17. RB: When did you decide to get into digital instead of firefighting? MB: When I went back to school I actually wanted to be a photographer but there were some prerequisites I had to take first. During the prerequisite was when I found out about the digital media program, so I caught the digital marketing bug in the prerequisites. 11. RB: What do you take away from your past work experience that you’ll apply to your current position at Bluetrain? MB: Having worked in both agencies and as part of an internal team, I have empathy on both sides. I want to bring an understanding from a client perspective, what their needs are and what their pain points are as well. 12. RB: What is your favorite food? MB: That’s a tough one. I like a lot of food! It depends really. I go through moods and swings. Right now, I would say Korean food. RB: Do you make it at home or go out to get it? MB: Mostly make it at home. My daughter is celiac so we do a lot of cooking because of that. RB: Home cooked food is the best! MB: One thing we’re discovering through this is that Asian food is really celiac-friendly! 13. RB: Speaking of food, mushrooms or olives? MB: Mushrooms. Olives are the devil’s fruit. There’s not much food I don’t like, but generally, I avoid olives. 14. RB: What do you do for fun? MB: Hang out with the fam and play soccer. Soccer has been a lifelong passion. If I could, […]

I was born in England, then I lived in Scotland, and I lived in Newfoundland, and I lived in Calgary, and went to school in Vancouver, and now Edmonton. RB: When did you come to Edmonton? HM: I came to Edmonton three years ago, right after university. RB: How long were you in England and Scotland before you came over here? HM: I moved to Canada when I was 11. RB: You don’t have an accent! HM: Oh no, I lost it! I tried to fit in really bad when I came here. 2. RB: What did you like most about growing up in all those places? HM: I liked how it always changed. I liked that there was always something new on the horizon. 3. RB: Any siblings? HM: Yes, one younger sister. RB: Where in the world did she end up? HM: She’s in BC. RB: And your parents? HM: In Calgary. RB: You guys like Canada? HM: YES! Ever since I was little my mom’s goal was to live in Canada. 4. RB: What words would your family use to describe you? HM: I think they’d say I’m funny. I’m pretty sure they laugh AT me not WITH me. They’d say I’m a go-getter as well. 5. RB: What is your family like? HM: They’re nice people. I love my family! They’re the best. 6. RB: When you were younger, what did you want to be when you grew up? I wanted to be an eye doctor. RB: Do you wear glasses? No. RB: So you were just fascinated with eyeballs? HM: Yeah. My dog always had the tear ducts that run so I would always make sure her face was nice and clean. My parents would say, “You’re always poking at her eyes!” RB: Aww, that’s very sweet! 7. RB: How would you describe your family’s heritage? HM: My dad was born in the Philippines, but his ancestry is British so I would probably describe myself as 100 per cent British. I wouldn’t say specifically English because my hair gives me away as Irish and the majority of them come from England at some point in time. 8. RB: What made you decide to apply to Bluetrain? HM: I was looking for a career change. Something different to what I was previously doing. 9. RB: How long were you with Pepsi? HM: I was there just under three years working as an account representative. RB: How did you get into that? HM: I started with them through the University. I was on their campus hire program so I just took another step up the ladder. RB: But you did school in Vancouver… RB: I did school in Vancouver and then they hired me full-time in Edmonton. RB: Oh! So they recruited you in Vancouver and brought you to Edmonton? Gotcha! Do you miss Vancouver? HM: I was going to say I miss the weather but not right now since it’s snowing. RB: And they go into crisis mode when it snows. HM: 1cm of snow and the city shuts down! *both laugh* HM: But I do miss the ocean. I like the sound of it, and the humidity! 10. RB: What do you think about the world of digital marketing? HM: Ever changing and exciting. RB: It IS changing, all the time! That’s for sure. 11. RB: What will you take away from your past work experience that you’ll apply to your current position at Bluetrain? HM: Patience and learning the process. 12. RB: Favourite Food? HM: Hot dogs! Hot dogs are my all-time favourite food. And I know they’re gross, but I love them. I even got a hot dog roller for Christmas! RB: That’s awesome! How often do you eat hot dogs? HM: I’m on my new year’s diet so monthly, but I would have previously said every two weeks. There was one week that I ate a hot dog every single day though… *both laugh* 13. RB: Mushrooms or olives? HM: Neither! It’s all about the texture. If they were both on my pizza, I probably wouldn’t eat the pizza. 14. RB: What do you do to relax? HM: I read and go to the gym – not at the same time though. 15. RB: What is your guilty pleasure? HM: I like chocolate a lot! RB: Dark, white, milk? HM: Regular milk chocolate – Cadbury! 16. RB: Favourite book or movie? I have favourite authors just because the books they write are often very similar. Jody Picoult, and the murder mystery books by James Patterson. RB: And movie? HM: I love Finding Nemo and Finding Dory, but Finding Nemo was better. 17. RB: Do you play volleyball or squash? This is a mandatory question from Bryan. HM: I used to play both but I recently had knee surgery so I’m not cleared to play either. RB: Oh no, what happened? HM: Soccer injury. I tore my ACL and they removed my meniscus as well so I don’t have much going on in there. 18. RB: Summer or winter? HM: I’m not built for either! I’m a Spring/Fall type of person. RB: Do you burn easy? HM: Yes! 19. RB: Tea or coffee? HM: Neither. I like hot chocolate. RB: Nice! You and Faustina will be fighting over all the hot chocolate here! 20. RB: Cookies or cupcakes? HM: Cookies & Cream Cupcakes – best of both worlds! At Confetti Sweets they actually have cupcakes with the cookies on top of them! RB: Awesome! Why choose?! HM: Why deprive yourself?! 21. Why You Still Need Keyword Research

by Shannon Young @

As search engines become more advanced, stuffing a website full of keywords will no longer produce a high Google ranking. That doesn’t mean, however, that you should tear up your Excel spreadsheets (whew). Keyword research is still an important part of the complete breakfast that is a modern SEO strategy. Here’s why! The Benefits of Keyword Research Most people never look past the first search engine results page (SERP) that shows up after their query. In order to capture organic search traffic, it’s crucial that your website ranks highly in the results. Although Google is getting better at understanding user intent and context, search engine algorithms still match query keywords with website content in order to generate the most relevant results for their users. That means that if your website is optimized for the right keywords, you are still more likely to rank highly on SERPs. Here’s a simplified example: Your mom’s birthday is coming up, and you want to buy her some beautiful homemade chocolates as a present. So, you type “artisan chocolate gift box” into Google. Out of all the chocolatiers in your city, only those whose websites use the words “artisan chocolate” and “gift box” will likely show up at the top of the search results. It’s crucial to know exactly which keywords people are using when they are trying to find your product so you can match your content accordingly. How to Do Great Keyword Research: The Basics There are two factors that affect the impact of any given keyword on traffic to your website. 1. Search Volume How many people search for this keyword at all? 2. Competition How many other websites are incorporating this keyword into their content as well? A high search volume means the potential traffic to your site is high. However, keywords with high search volume also tend to have lots of websites vying for top rankings. The trick is to find really specific keyword phrases (also called “long tail keywords”) that have decent volume and low competition so you have the best chance of ranking for them. Does this sound exciting? Pause here and check out our step-by-step guide to long tail keyword research. If you’re ready for a more advanced look at keyword research, press on! How to Do Great Keyword Research: A Deeper Dive The SEO gurus at Moz have gone one step further and put together their own mathematical formula that calculates the potential usefulness of any keyword based on four factors. Two we’ve already seen: 1. Volume 2. Competition/Keyword Difficulty And two more that go a little further: 3. Keyword Opportunity: If you actually type the keyword into a search engine, what opportunities are available on the resulting SERP? Let’s say you wanted to write a blog post about the best workout clothes. You might think Lululemon would be a good keyword. But wait! What happens when you Google Lululemon? Almost the entire SERP is dominated by Lululemon’s own website, the knowledge graph sidebar, and their branded social media accounts. No matter how great your article is, there isn’t room for it to rank against a powerful brand. As an aside, if you want your own website to have sweet subheadings and appear in the knowledge graph, check out our post on data-rich snippets, semantic markup, and schema.org. 4. Importance: How important is a keyword to your client (i.e. the person who knows the most about their own business)? Business owners have a unique understanding of their market, and sometimes they’ll know that a certain keyword or phrase is important to their customers, even if it’s not showing up on traditional keyword research engines like Google’s keyword planner. Just also be aware of ‘ego queries’, which may be more industry competitors search each other rather than customers. We love cold, hard data but it’s also important to listen to people (as this post from Search Engine Land points out). Keyword Research is Awesome, But it’s Not a Magic Bullet The take home message today is that keyword research is still an important way to improve the SERP ranking of your website. Just remember, there are over 200 different factors affecting Google rankings. To supplement your awesome keyword research, make sure you are thinking about semantic markup, 10x content, and other factors that improve your website’s ranking. Agree? Disagree? Think keyword research is dead? We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!

Rank Higher on Google Search with Mobile-First Indexing

by Shauna Heryford @

Mobile has been a key focus of Google’s for quite some time now. It used to be that when consumers prepared to make a buying decision they would flip through the phonebook to find listed companies before choosing one to do business with. That type of research was replaced by internet research, and now the majority of consumers rely on their mobile devices for their online activities. The comScore graph below shows how the number of mobile users surpassed desktop users in 2014. In 2015, the number of mobile searches also surpassed desktop. Google’s mobile-first focus is simply adapting to this global trend. Google’s search algorithms have been focused on mobile internet activity for several years now, introducing a large mobile-friendly push in April 2015 where companies saw a boost if they were deemed mobile-friendly. However, the latest mobile-first indexing goes further to help connect mobile users with the online content they are looking for. What is Mobile-First Indexing? To answer this question, we must first understand how Google works. In simple terms, Google collects information on every webpage and puts it in a massive catalog, also called an index. It uses this index to formulate and display the search results that come up when users submit a query, also known as a Google search. Until recently, Google has primarily collected data and viewed webpages through the eyes of desktop users first and mobile users second. However, in November 2016, Google announced that they will be changing the way they determine search results by moving to mobile-first indexing. In other words, this means Google’s algorithm will no longer base its rankings off your desktop version of the webpage, but rather will use the mobile version. Now, the content showing for your website on mobile devices is the first thing Google will use to determine search results. The desktop version of your website is still important, but it is secondary to the mobile version. Simply put, a webpage with less mobile content and content that is not mobile-friendly will not rank as well. “Mobile-First Indexing means Google’s algorithm will no longer base its rankings off your desktop version of the webpage, but rather will use the mobile version.” Is Your Website Prepared for Mobile-First Indexing? Not only does your website have to be mobile-friendly across devices in how it looks and can be navigated, which is where having a responsive web design comes into play, but the content has to be present too—if it’s not, it will not rank as well. It was quite typical in the past to have less content present on your mobile site, however, this now needs to be re-evaluated. If your site is missing content, your site could now be missing from those search results! How to Improve Mobile SEO? There are three ways to implement a mobile website: 1. Responsive web design This is when your HTML and URLs will stay the same across both sites, regardless of how the user is accessing your content (desktop, mobile phone, tablet, etc.). It will respond to whatever screen size the user is using and display your content in the most user-friendly way. Responsive web design is Google’s favourite design pattern and your best strategy for effective mobile SEO. 2. Dynamic serving This is when you use the same URL regardless of the device, but generate a different version of HTML, meaning a different website design and content for each device type based on what the server knows about the user’s browser. The impact of mobile-first indexing comes into play if your desktop site is significantly different from your mobile site, and your mobile site has less content. You want to make sure your mobile content is optimized and user-friendly. 3. Separate URLs This is when you have different HTML and URLs for each device. Google will try to detect the user’s device and then redirect them to the appropriate page for that specific device. If your website is using dynamic serving or separate URLs, you have to make sure that you’re not missing important content on your mobile site that could interfere with its SEO. You also want to avoid adding large amounts of HTML content markup that isn’t relevant to the specific content of each page on your mobile site. HTML markup on content would include headings, lists, tables, anchors, images, and quotations. Sometimes these elements will make a mobile site less user-friendly. Mobile Optimization If your desktop site is completely mobile-friendly—meaning it has a responsive design, is easy to use on mobile, and has all your key content—then you have nothing to worry about. Google will index your content across both versions of the website the same and without issue. If you’re developing a brand new site, design for mobile content, usability and speed first and your desktop version second. Make sure everything works on your mobile version, including forms, audio and visual, and other key functions. Google also considers a positive or negative user experience when producing search results. Of course, always make sure your content has been optimized for search engine results, use structured data and think local search! Use this mobile-friendly test from Google to see how your website ranks. After entering the URL you want to test, this tool will let you know whether the page is mobile-friendly or not (keep in mind, it isn’t looking at what content you have, it’s just looking to see if what you have is mobile-friendly), and how to fix it if necessary. To do a site-wide mobility test, you can go to your site in Google Search Console > Search Traffic > Mobile Usability. Is your company’s website mobile friendly? If so, does the mobile version have all the same key content as your desktop version? If not, it could be doing a lot more damage than just creating a frustrating experience for users…it could be deterring them from finding you all together. If you have questions or need assistance to ensure both your […]

How To Do SEO For Existing Website And Increase Your ROI

by Joanne Chong @ SEOPressor – WordPress SEO Plugin

Many people create a website with their own set of preferences, which generally tend to include the visual design and the information they want to get across. These two things have a fraction of the impact of SEO, but because they’re considered ‘artistic’ as opposed to ‘technical’, it’s easier to get creative with them, so people are more motivated to do them. That’s a mistake. But don’t worry! It’s one that you can easily start ...

Facebook Ads for Business: Maximize Your Budget

by Hannah Martin @

You have stellar Facebook content with awesome creative and excellent copy, but your budget is tight. Follow these tips below and learn how to stretch your dollar to get the greatest return from Facebook paid advertising. Target Your Facebook Ads If you are working with a limited budget, it is important to make sure you’re reaching the right people at the right time. Audiences that know you and have previously interacted with you are more likely to convert than those who are hearing from you for the first time. The beautiful thing about Facebook advertising is it provides you with multiple targeting options that ensure you are able to reach your desired audience. First, target those who know you Utilize custom audiences to target those who actively visit your website and those who visit occasionally. Facebook custom audiences are simple to create and get your product or service in front of those who are most likely to convert. Second, target those who like and engage with you on Facebook Simply add the desired connection type found in the Ad Set menu. Third, target those you haven’t interacted with yet Add specific demographic criteria to narrow down broad geographic audiences into your target market. Finally, create lookalike audiences These can be created from custom or saved audiences and help you reach new people similar to your current audience in the country that you choose. A smaller initial audience size from a good quality source is recommended for replication. Facebook allows you to target 1-10% of the population of your chosen country. The lower the percentage, the greater the similarities between your original audience and your lookalike audience. By creating a lookalike audience you are able to reproduce high converting audiences with new individuals. Optimize Your Ads for Mobile Facebook is consumed primarily on mobile devices (including tablets). In fact, about 85% of the Facebook Ad results at Bluetrain come from mobile. When creating these types of ads, Facebook provides specific mobile design and text recommendations. For the best results, be short and concise with your message and ensure all ads are within the Facebook Ad text requirements since the text on mobile ads will be truncated to fit the smaller screen. Choose Great Visuals Make sure your ad images are relevant, clear, and text-free. Images with text or excessive graphic manipulation do not perform well on mobile devices. Facebook will provide you with a warning during ad creation if they think your image will hinder ad performance. Test Your Facebook Ads on a Mobile Device If you created the ad on a desktop, we recommend previewing it on your mobile device before launching to ensure that it displays correctly. To do this, you will need to access your ad in Ads Manager and select ‘Edit’. Locate ‘Ad preview’ and select the box with the arrow in the top right. Under View on Facebook, select ‘Facebook mobile News Feed’. Refresh your mobile Facebook app, and the ad will appear within 10 minutes (usually within 1 minute) on your newsfeed as a demo. Track Your Progress & Rework Your Ad Keep track of your ad performance and pause your campaign when you are not receiving desired results. Facebook has multiple metrics on which to evaluate performance. Metrics that are worth taking note of include: Impressions How many times your advert was viewed. A baseline metric of which all other metrics can be compared to evaluate ad success. Frequency How many times an individual saw your ad. Monitor frequency rate and try to keep it low. I like to keep it below 4 and will pause and rework ads that are of a frequency of 4 or higher. A high-frequency rate indicates that you are showing your ad to the same individual multiple times which is ineffective if no action is being taken. To decrease frequency, consider expanding your audience or retargeting a different segment. Link Clicks Clicks on the specific action of your ad that landed the viewer to your desired page. If link clicks are low or becoming less frequent, consider rewriting your ad copy to improve your call-to-action. Click Through Rate Percentage of people who saw your ad and took an action. The higher the better! When your click through rate begins to decrease, consider pausing your ad and changing up creative or ad copy since your current content may have lost its appeal. Cost Per Click The cost of each link click. This is determined by dividing the amount spent by the number of link clicks. Amount Spent Total dollar value spent on Facebook advertising efforts. Be sure you are sticking to the budget you initially set. Boost Your Posts To increase the success of your boosted post, ensure that you have allowed enough time to pass for the post to garner organic results before boosting. Boosting a post with engagement increases the success of your ad since it has natural engagement – which always encourages more. Before Posting Your Next Facebook Ad Next time you are on a tight budget, consider the following: Am I reaching those most likely to take action? Am I reaching my audience on the device they interact with most? Finally, am I willing to rework my ad for optimal results? If your company is looking for additional ad support, Bluetrain offers a wide variety of Online Advertising Services.  Contact us today to learn more. $3M in 7 Months: The GorillaGoodies Standard Operating Procedure

by podcast@ethercycle.com (Kurt Elster) @ The Unofficial Shopify Podcast

When starting an ecommerce store, it generally happens in one of two ways: You find a pain or problem in your life and realize you can solve it. And that becomes your first product. Or you want to try ecommerce, then brainstorm a dozen ideas to try. Corey Wright has turned the latter into a science. Corey started a digital marketing company with his brother in 2005 that focused on helping to recruit and license real estate agents throughout the United States and Canada. In May of 2016, he and his brother Casey got the itch to start an e-commerce store to see what they could learn about selling physical products online that may help them better sell their real estate services online. Over a weekend, they launched a store selling Donald Trump bobbleheads, which quickly grew much larger than they expected. Fast forward three months, they had a full blown e-commerce business, processing over 5,000 orders per month with every part of the supply chain accounted for. In just 7 months, their e-commerce sales accounted for nearly 2/3 of their 2016 revenues and grossed more than $3M in sales. Currently, they continue to run their real estate services business, but place a much heavier focus on growing the e-commerce side of their business.
